It's vacation time! Whether you are traveling by car or by plane, here are 5 Travel Tips that can help make your planning a success.
1. LUGGAGE - TRAVEL LIGHT
If you are flying and carrying on, remember that your luggage needs to meet the airline's requirements for size and weight. Your airline website's FAQ should have the requirements. If you are checking your luggage, there is a weight limit and a penalty for anything over the limit. If you are traveling by car, you will be carrying the luggage yourself so make sure it's not too heavy and fits in the trunk of your car.
2. CHECK THE WEATHER
Check the weather before packing. You don't want to end up spending part of your vacation shopping for clothes that you don't want and using your spending money to pay for them.
3. PLAN YOUR TRIP AND MAKE A LIST
Make a list with the number of days of your vacation, your special activities and any clothes that you need for them. Pack clothes that go together so that you can mix and match to make several different outfits and if you pack a jacket, make sure it works well with each outfit.
Pack thin layers instead of bulky sweaters so that you have more room in your luggage and if there is a washer and dryer on site, consider packing less of your everyday items that you can wash one or twice on your vacation.
4. TOILETRY LIQUIDS
If you are carrying on your luggage, remember the 3-1-1 rule, where all liquids must be 3.4 oz or less and fit into 1 quart size plastic bag. When I travel to a hotel, I leave most of my liquids at home and use the free ones provided by the hotel. Otherwise, quick tip: take the lid off your liquid bottles, put a piece of plastic wrap over the top and put the lid back on. This will help with spillage.
5. TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Do you need a valid passport? Check here. Otherwise, make sure you have a personal or student ID. Staying at a hotel: find your frequent traveler numbers and make sure they are in your wallet or purse. Be sure to find your insurance card and make sure you have it as well. It's also good to call your credit card company and alert them that you will be in a different state or country to prevent unnecessary fraud alerts.
Finally, make sure you have enough time to pack so you don't forget anything and more importantly, HAVE FUN!
