“Something old...Something new...Something borrowed...Something blue…”
Remember a few weeks ago, we talked about one of the oldest wedding traditions and one of the four symbolic phrases...Something Old. Today, I want to share my thoughts on the second phrase...
Something new. We’ve talked about the something old, but what exactly is “something new”? And how do you ever decide what to choose? Optimism for the things to come, as you take your next steps into the unknown. It is a symbol of hope for your marriage, for your future family, for your life as you become someone’s wife. It’s a beautiful tradition, but I’ve been struggling to find something to represent this hope. Nothing seems expansive enough to hold all of the hopes that I have for my future family, my future marriage.
Something new symbolizes the start of your new life, so it should be something that has meaning to you. Some women use their wedding gift from their groom. Some consider their wedding dress to be “something new”. You could count the special jewelry that you picked out for your wedding day. It could be the new makeup that you bought. I read about one clever bride who made a key to the house that she and her husband would be moving into and put it in her bouquet, as a symbol for the hope that she had for a happy home for the rest of their days. You can plan it out months in advance, like her, or you can decide the day of your wedding what you’re going to use to represent your future.
In truth, I might not know what my something new will be until my wedding. I haven’t decided what object will represent my hopes and dreams for the next stage of my life. It seems like a silly thing, to make all of your wishes for happiness, love and prosperity on one little object. But that’s part of the magic of weddings, right? They’re a symbol of everything we want for our new lives with the love of our lives. So maybe, for that one day, it’s okay to wish on a necklace or a dress or whatever else you want to wish on. It’s the most magical day of your life.
It doesn’t have to be a big thing, it just has to be special to you. It could be anything that you feel like. It only has to be a symbol for your hopes for this next step in your life, and, no matter what the object is, that’s beautiful in itself.
